The week ended with two birds walking out of a crate at Sam in the Desert National Park, and the number that mattered was not two. It was 97 - the birds held at the Sam and Ramdevra breeding centres, published for the first time, of which 40 came from wild-laid eggs and 57 were bred in captivity. A decade of work turned into one measurable fact. Three days earlier a tigress went into Buxa, eight years after 800 chital were released there to build her a prey base. Both programmes did the same thing in the same order: prepare the ground, then bring the animal. Neither release gives a wild population figure, which is the number that would say whether any of it is working.
