This week, in story-arcs

12–18 October 2026

PIB published 353 releases this week · we curated 53 into 53 arcs.
Editor's note

Three hundred and fifty-three releases, and a week that kept contradicting itself. The same September was priced at 5.54 per cent retail and 11.39 wholesale; female labour force participation was 34.6 per cent in a monthly bulletin and 40 in a backgrounder published four hours earlier; the self-help group universe was counted three ways in one day; GatiShakti's own data layers were put at 1,800 and 23,493 in releases a day apart; and PIB's 2014 Ramsar baseline remained both 24 and 26. None of these are errors exactly - most are different measures wearing the same name - which is why the week is a lesson in reading the denominator before the number.

The decisions that will outlast it: IDBI Bank sold at Rs 81 a share and defended with a 2018 judgment on promissory estoppel; social assistance renewed for five years at Rs 53,428 crore with only the disability pension raised; trade margins on 137 anti-cancer drugs capped nine days after the Cabinet approved the idea; the research fund naming its first 19 managers and pushing Rs 517 crore out of the door in twelve days, always at exactly half the project cost; and the Navy taking its first major warship from a private yard. The air quality commission spent the week widening camera surveillance over NCR industry while discovering that its own closure orders were coming back undelivered - the most honest sentence any regulator published this week.
