BRE Summit 2026 draws 135 countries, flags storage priority
Pralhad Joshi said the four-day Bharat Renewable Energy Summit drew over 75,000 visitors and 135 countries, that the 500 GW non-fossil target needs about USD 220 billion, and that energy storage is a near-term priority.
What happened
- The Bharat Renewable Energy Summit & Expo 2026 ran from 2 to 5 November at Bharat Mandapam, with 135 countries, over 75,000 visitors and 627 speakers in 113 sessions.
- Pralhad Joshi said India needs about USD 220 billion for the 500 GW non-fossil target, and that investors, including pension funds, showed that capital is not a constraint.
- Discussions named energy storage a top near-term priority and stressed bankable power purchase agreements, transmission and grid flexibility; an FDRE rate of Rs 5.25 a unit drew interest.
- SECI signed an MoU with Power2X on green molecules, with a first tranche of 3 lakh tonnes a year of green methanol; the ISA proposed a USD 200 million Africa Solar Facility.
- The Summit saw 10 MoUs and Framework Agreements, the launch of the ISA Academy and SHINE, and the release of 37 reports, including Ease of Doing Solar and the National Hydrogen Survey.
For Prelims
- 500 GW target: India's goal of 500 GW of non-fossil electricity capacity by 2030, announced at COP26 in Glasgow in 2021 together with net-zero emissions by 2070.
- International Solar Alliance (ISA): launched by India and France at COP21 in 2015, headquartered at Gurugram; its Assembly is the top decision-making body and held its Ninth Session at this Summit.
- FDRE and RTC: Firm and Dispatchable Renewable Energy and Round-the-Clock Renewable Energy combine solar, wind and storage to supply power on demand; SECI is a public sector company under MNRE.
- GW versus GWh: GW measures capacity (power) and GWh measures energy stored or delivered; the Cabinet's Rs 14,500 crore storage support of 4 November targets 92 GWh (PIB 2332474).
- Green hydrogen: hydrogen made by electrolysing water with renewable power; the National Green Hydrogen Mission, approved in January 2023, targets 5 million tonnes a year by 2030.
- Green methanol: methanol made from green hydrogen and captured carbon dioxide or biomass, used as a shipping and industrial fuel and as a way to carry green hydrogen.
- InvITs and blended finance: Infrastructure Investment Trusts, regulated by SEBI, pool operating assets for investors; blended finance mixes public or concessional money with private capital to cut risk.
- PM Surya Ghar and PM-KUSUM: the Vice-President said over 65 lakh households joined PM Surya Ghar and nearly 30 lakh farmers benefited under PM-KUSUM (PIB 2333027); PM-KUSUM began in 2019.
For UPSC: BRE Summit 2026 (2-5 November): 135 countries; 500 GW non-fossil target needs about USD 220 billion; FDRE Rs 5.25 per unit; ISA Africa Solar Facility USD 200 million.
What it is NOT: The release gives no new investment, capacity or tender figure beyond the USD 220 billion estimate, and does not say who will provide that money. It does not give installed renewable capacity or the share of storage in planned additions. The 'more than a quarter' figure has no year-wise series or split by source. The USD 200 million Africa Solar Facility is only proposed, with no donor or timeline named, and the release says nothing on curtailment or transmission delays.

Anchor
India's electricity demand is rising with industry, cooling, electric vehicles and data centres. The next phase of clean energy is less about adding panels and more about a grid that can use them at all hours.
Substantiation (data)
The Summit drew 135 countries and over 75,000 visitors. Joshi put the need for the 500 GW target at about USD 220 billion and said renewables met more than a quarter of annual consumption last year; a recent SECI FDRE tender found Rs 5.25 per unit.
Position
Investors from pension funds to patient capital said money is available, so the priorities shift to bankable power purchase agreements, storage, transmission and clear land and approvals.
Counterpoint
A summit's tone is not delivery. The release gives no commitments in rupees, nothing on curtailment or transmission delays, and the Africa Solar Facility is only proposed.
Way forward
Align storage and transmission planning with procurement, as the investor roundtable urged, publish storage pipeline data, standardise power purchase agreements and build domestic cell, electrolyser and storage supply.
Conclusion
The Summit moved the agenda from capacity to a reliable, flexible power system. The measure is gigawatts that reach consumers at night.
