PM Surya Ghar: 1 lakh rooftops every six days
At the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit, Pralhad Joshi said the rooftop scheme now completes about one lakh installations every six days; solar capacity has grown from 3 GW in 2014 to 172 GW.
What happened
- Union Minister Pralhad Joshi said at a fireside chat on day 3 of the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit & Expo 2026 that PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana has become a mass movement.
- India is completing approximately one lakh rooftop solar installations every six days, which he said reduces emissions and strengthens energy security during peak hours; millions of households reach zero electricity bills and sell surplus power.
- Installed solar capacity has grown from 3 GW in 2014 to 172 GW; module manufacturing capacity has crossed 200 GW and solar cell capacity is about 45 GW.
- Sessions included the Next Terawatt Diplomatic Dialogue (MoS Shripad Yesso Naik), an ISA CEO Caucus, country sessions with five partners, and pipelines from six States.
- The 4th International Conference on Green Hydrogen cited the 5 million tonne by 2030 mission target, and the RTSE Vendor Buddy design tool was launched.
For Prelims
- PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana: launched on 13 February 2024 with an outlay of Rs 75,021 crore to put rooftop solar on one crore households, with up to 300 free units a month.
- Central subsidy: 60% of cost for the first 2 kW and 40% for the next kW, capped at 3 kW, which works out to Rs 78,000 for a 3 kW system.
- Net metering: the Electricity (Rights of Consumers) Rules, 2020 let rooftop owners export surplus power to the distribution company and be credited for it.
- ALMM: the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers, kept by MNRE, restricts subsidised projects to listed modules; Surya Ghar subsidy needs domestically made cells.
- International Solar Alliance: launched by India and France at COP21 in 2015, headquartered at Gurugram; it convened the CEO Caucus mentioned in the release.
- National Green Hydrogen Mission: approved in January 2023; the release gives its target of 5 million tonnes of annual green hydrogen capacity by 2030.
- 500 GW goal: India's target of 500 GW of non-fossil capacity by 2030 is cited in PIB release 2246898, which also stresses storage for variable renewables.
- GW versus GWh: GW measures capacity (power); GWh measures energy delivered or stored; solar capacity of 172 GW does not equal generation.
For UPSC: PM Surya Ghar rooftop solar: about 1 lakh installations every 6 days (Joshi, BRE Summit 2026); solar capacity 3 GW (2014) to 172 GW; module capacity above 200 GW.
What it is NOT: The release does not give the number of rooftop systems installed so far, how many households are enrolled, the subsidy released or any State-wise split. The claim of millions of zero-bill households has no source figure, and the claim of savings to States is not quantified. It says nothing on the share of rooftop solar in the 172 GW, on vendor quality or loan access, or on distribution companies' revenue loss from consumers who stop buying power.

Anchor
Rooftop solar turns the electricity consumer into a producer. A scheme that shows up in millions of homes tests whether clean energy policy can reach households and not only developers.
Substantiation (data)
Joshi cited about 1 lakh installations every 6 days, solar capacity rising from 3 GW in 2014 to 172 GW, module capacity above 200 GW and solar cells at about 45 GW.
Position
Subsidy, free units and sale of surplus power give households a reason to act, while a domestic manufacturing base lowers import exposure.
Counterpoint
A pace is not a total. Without a cumulative count against the one crore target, and with distribution companies losing paying consumers, the scheme's fiscal and grid effects stay open.
Way forward
Publish State-wise installations and subsidy data, speed up discom approvals and net-metering, finance low-income households, and pair rooftop growth with storage and grid upgrades.
Conclusion
One lakh every six days is a strong pace. The measure is the one crore households the scheme was built for.
