Khet Bachaao Rabi: 50 lakh farmers, 100 high-fertiliser districts
PIB's backgrounder on Khet Bachaao Abhiyaan-Rabi 2026 (22 October-30 November) sets targets of 50 lakh farmers in 50,000 villages, 4,150 KVK-ATMA teams and 50,000 demonstrations, with States told to prioritise 100 high fertiliser-consuming districts.
What happened
- Khet Bachaao Abhiyaan-Rabi 2026 runs from 22 October to 30 November 2026 under the theme 'Swasth Dhara, Samriddh Kisan'.
- It covers 34 States/UTs, 700+ districts and 50,000 villages, targeting about 50 lakh farmers through 4,150 teams of KVKs and ATMA with 12,000+ scientists and functionaries.
- It plans 50,000 field demonstrations and 11,750 trainings; States must prioritise 100 high fertiliser-consuming districts.
- Priorities: 4R nutrient management, natural farming, INM, crop residue management, diversification to oilseeds and pulses, drought contingency plans and IPM.
- The June 2026 edition reached 92.44 lakh farmers through 1.34 lakh events and about 1.07 crore people directly.
For Prelims
- 4R principle: Right source, Right rate, Right time, Right place - the global framework for fertiliser stewardship, here tied to General Fertiliser Recommendations.
- NPK imbalance: the agronomically recommended N:P:K ratio is usually cited as 4:2:1; Indian use is heavily skewed to nitrogen, largely urea, which is the 'imbalanced nutrient use' the campaign targets.
- Soil Health Card scheme: launched in 2015 to give farmers plot-level nutrient status and recommendations; over 26 crore cards have been issued (PM, 30 October, PRID 2330423).
- KVK and ATMA: Krishi Vigyan Kendras are ICAR's district-level farm science centres; ATMA (Agricultural Technology Management Agency) is the district extension body under the Agriculture Ministry.
- Integrated Nutrient Management: combining chemical fertilisers with organic manure, green manuring (such as dhaincha) and bio-fertilisers to sustain soil organic carbon.
- Natural farming: promoted under the National Mission on Natural Farming; chemical-free, relying on on-farm inputs.
- Crop residue burning: the campaign's IEC targets Punjab, Haryana, UP and MP; CAQM monitors stubble fires for NCR (carded 30 October, PRID 2330449).
- Rice-fallows: land left idle after kharif rice, mainly in eastern India; sowing pulses and oilseeds there is a low-cost route to diversification.
For UPSC: Khet Bachaao Abhiyaan-Rabi 2026 (22 Oct-30 Nov): 50 lakh farmers, 50,000 villages, 4,150 KVK-ATMA teams, 100 high fertiliser districts; 4R principle; kharif round reached 92.44 lakh.
What it is NOT: The backgrounder gives targets and outreach counts but no outcome measures - no change in fertiliser use, soil organic carbon or yields from the June round. It does not name the 100 high fertiliser-consuming districts, give the campaign's budget, or link it to fertiliser subsidy reform, which shapes the price signals farmers respond to.

Anchor
India's soils are suffering from too much of one fertiliser and too little of the rest. Khet Bachaao Abhiyaan is an extension campaign aimed at changing farmers' habits rather than prices.
Substantiation (data)
KBA-Rabi 2026 targets 50 lakh farmers in 50,000 villages with 4,150 teams, 50,000 demonstrations and priority to 100 high fertiliser-consuming districts; the June round reached 92.44 lakh farmers.
Position
Field demonstrations by scientists are among the most persuasive extension tools; seeing a neighbour's balanced-nutrient plot does more than a leaflet.
Counterpoint
Campaigns compete with incentives: subsidised urea is cheap relative to phosphate and potash, so advice to balance nutrients runs against what farmers pay. Outreach counts are not outcomes.
Way forward
Measure fertiliser sales and soil carbon in the 100 priority districts before and after; align subsidy design with balanced use; and use Soil Health Card data to target advice plot by plot.
Conclusion
Soil cannot be saved in forty days. The campaign matters if its demonstrations become habits.
