Thirty-two crore families are recorded and 2.6 crore have self-enumerated. The digital-first feature of this census is carrying roughly eight per cent of it.
What happened
- Mann Ki Baat, 138th episode: the census first phase is nearly complete in all States and UTs, with over 32 crore families recorded.
- More than 2 crore 60 lakh people have completed self-enumeration at se.census.gov.in - available in Hindi plus 16 languages.
- The process needs no documents, takes 15-20 minutes, and issues an ID to be given to the enumerator for verification.
- Conservation: elephants returned to Sonai Rupai Wildlife Sanctuary, Assam; the pygmy hog went from six animals to over 190.
- The Poshan Tracker now carries about nine crore registered beneficiaries; Modhera is India's first Surya Gram.

- Self-enumeration: the citizen-filled option in this census. Login by mobile, no document upload, an ID generated for the enumerator to verify against - so self-declaration is checked, not merely accepted.

- Modhera: the Sun Temple built by King Bhimdev I in 1025, attacked in 1026 - the same year Mahmud of Ghazni destroyed Somnath - and later by Alauddin Khilji. It is now India's first Surya Gram, or solar village.
- One District One Product: cited through Amla in Pratapgarh, Uttar Pradesh - about 100 processing units, with self-help groups making candy, preserves, juice and digestive powder.
- Nutrition Month campaigns named: Chhattisgarh's Har Ghar Munga (moringa), Gujarat's Vangi Spardha millet-dish contest with over two lakh participants, and Mizoram's Poshan Vatika drive under the tradition of Talo-Mad-Yana.
For UPSC: Mann Ki Baat is where scheme-level numbers surface before they appear in an annual report, and this episode carries three worth keeping: the census progress figures, the Poshan Tracker registration count, and a conservation programme with a stated base population. Use the self-enumeration ratio on e-governance and citizen-facing digital services, the pygmy hog on species recovery, and Modhera as a single example that joins heritage, iconoclasm and renewable energy.
What it is NOT: The two census figures are in different units - 32 crore families against 2.6 crore people - and the episode does not reconcile them, so the self-enumeration share has to be inferred from the portal's own design. No target for self-enumeration is stated, and no State-wise or urban-rural split, so it is impossible to say whether the digital route is reaching the people it was built for. No completion date is given for the first phase or a start date for the second. The pygmy hog figure has no timeframe attached, and the Sonai Rupai account gives no elephant count. The Poshan Tracker registration number carries no service-delivery figure beside it, so nine crore is a count of enrolment, not of nutrition.

The census has recorded data for more than 32 crore families. More than 2 crore 60 lakh people have filled it in themselves on a mobile phone. On the portal's own description - one person registering a whole family - self-enumeration is carrying roughly one household in twelve. The feature that makes this census different from every previous one is doing about eight per cent of the work.
Substantiation (data)
The design is sound and genuinely low-friction: a mobile login at se.census.gov.in, Hindi and sixteen other languages, no documents to upload, fifteen to twenty minutes, and an ID the household hands to the enumerator so that the self-declaration is verified rather than simply accepted. The first phase is nearly complete in every State and Union Territory, including work under way in the snow-bound districts of Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Uttarakhand.
Position
Verification is what makes this worth doing. A self-enumeration system that skipped the enumerator visit would trade accuracy for speed in the one exercise where accuracy is the entire product. Generating an ID that the household surrenders to a field officer keeps the citizen's convenience and the state's check in the same process, which is the right way to digitise a statutory count.
Counterpoint
Eight per cent is not yet a transformation. A digital option used by one household in twelve leaves the enumerator carrying the other eleven, so the field burden is essentially unchanged while a second system has been built and run alongside it. Whether that is a slow start or a ceiling depends on data the episode does not give - no target, no trend, no urban-rural or State breakdown.
Problematisation
The portal runs in Hindi and sixteen other languages, against twenty-two in the Eighth Schedule. Self-enumeration also requires a smartphone, connectivity and the confidence to classify your own household. Each of those filters in the same direction, which means the eight per cent is unlikely to be a random eight per cent - and a census whose digital half skews urban, literate and connected is a census whose two halves were collected by different methods from different populations.
Conclusion
Judge the self-enumeration experiment on one number nobody has published: the share by State and by rural-urban split. If it is uniform, India has added a genuine channel. If it is concentrated, it has added a convenience for the already-counted and left the hard enumeration exactly where it was.
