845 kg seized, and 801 of it is ganja from two truck-and-scooter stops

The DRI's numbers close exactly - 845.2 kg and fifteen arrests across eleven days. What the weight hides is that one commodity supplies 95 per cent of it.

What happened

For Prelims

For UPSC: A rare enforcement release whose figures reconcile, which makes it usable as evidence rather than illustration. Use it on drug trafficking and internal security, on the institutional map where DRI, NCB and State ANTFs divide the same problem, and on the supply-versus-demand-reduction argument, where the Vision Document's own pillars and the conference agenda point different ways.
What it is NOT: The release gives no valuation for any seizure, which is the figure that would let a 752 kg ganja haul be compared with 5.8 kg of cocaine. It names no network, source or destination beyond the immediate route, and only the Calicut operation reaches past the carrier to a receiver and organiser - the other fourteen arrests are of couriers. There is no conviction or prosecution data, so what happens after an NDPS arrest is not addressed. No national or period-on-period series is given, so whether 845 kg in eleven days is high, normal or low cannot be judged. The opening summary also lists ganja, charas and amphetamine while omitting cocaine, which the subtitle includes.

Anchor
The DRI seized over 845 kg of narcotics in eleven days and arrested fifteen people, and the itemised operations add up exactly to both figures. About 801 kg of that total - roughly 95 per cent - is ganja from just two stops, and 752.3 kg of that came out of a single container truck at Bodh Gaya.
Substantiation (data)
The composition tells a different story from the weight. Cocaine was 5.8 kg, amphetamine about 4.5 kg; together, 1.2 per cent of the haul. The concealment methods range from knee caps worn under sarees to rice husk, sacks, baby powder bottles and salwar suit sets - five distinct techniques across the eight operations described, which is what intelligence-led interception looks like when it works.
Position
Enforcement capacity here is genuine and the reporting is honest. An agency that publishes figures that reconcile, names its dates, and specifies packet counts and concealment methods is describing work rather than announcing it. The Calicut follow-up, which reached the receiver and organiser, is the operation that matters most.
Counterpoint
Seizure weight is the wrong headline metric. A kilogram of cocaine and a kilogram of ganja are not comparable in value, harm or trafficking sophistication, and reporting in aggregate kilograms makes the cheapest commodity dominate every total. No valuation appears anywhere in the release.
Problematisation
Fourteen of the fifteen arrests are couriers - passengers, a truck driver, scooter riders. Only Calicut reached an organiser. The Vision Document on Narcotics Control lists demand and harm reduction as one of four pillars, yet of the eight technical sessions at the conference opening the next day, one addresses demand reduction and five map to enforcement.
Conclusion
The interception record is strong and the accounting is clean. The strategy question it raises is whether an enforcement system that counts kilograms and catches carriers is measuring the thing it means to reduce.
