Four moth bean varieties held 35 rainless days, and no yield is reported
ICAR-CAZRI says its four released moth bean varieties kept flowering and podding through a 35-day rainless spell in Kharif 2026, but it publishes no yield and names no comparison variety.
What happened
- ICAR-CAZRI, Jodhpur reported the field performance of four moth bean varieties - CAZRI Moth-4, 5, 6 and 7, released in the last three years - during Kharif 2026, which the release calls the current El Nino year.
- Rainfall ceased after the event of 3 August 2026; the spell to 7 September 2026 ran 35 days, broken only by three to four showers of under 2.5 mm each.
- Cumulative pan evaporation was about 317 mm from 10 July to 2 September 2026 and about 180 mm within the 35-day spell.
- Soil moisture at 0-10 cm fell from 15-16 per cent (v/v) to 5-6 per cent, while the 10-40 cm layer fell from about 23 per cent to 16 per cent.
- Seed is being multiplied on seven hectares at the CAZRI Research Farm against a Saathi Portal indent of 23.32 quintals for 2026, against 63.2 quintals indented in 2025.

The release covers one season on the institute's own experimental fields, names no second site and no releasing or notifying authority for the four varieties, states no replication or test of significance, and gives no area actually sown to these varieties - the 25 per cent of Rajasthan's moth bean area is an arithmetic projection off seed-multiplication potential, not an achieved figure.

These varieties begin flowering at about 30 days after sowing and adjust growth and maturity to the moisture they find, which the release calls developmental plasticity. Sown at monsoon onset in July at 45 x 10 cm, they had built canopy before the rain stopped, and were bearing pods at about 55 days.
Problematisation
The evidence stops short of the number that would settle it. Resilience is reported as green appearance, good growth and profuse pod development, which is observation rather than measurement. No yield is published for any of the four varieties, no check variety is named, no second site or second season appears, and no replication or test of significance is stated.
Counterpoint
The seed chain is where adoption is decided, and the indent has fallen rather than risen. Through the Saathi Portal the four varieties drew 63.2 quintals in 2025 and 23.32 quintals for 2026, met from seven hectares at the institute's own farm, with Rajasthan State Seeds Corporation, the National Seeds Corporation and selected private players multiplying.
Position
Breeding is the cheaper half of climate adaptation and the seed system is the harder half. The release concedes as much: the ICAR Director General says a package of practices - plant population, sowing date, weed and moisture management - is what lets genetic potential appear. A variety covering a quarter of the State's area stays arithmetic until the certified seed exists.
