The oocyte and the semen were both Badri; the cow that carried it was not
Both gametes came from Badri animals and the embryo was made in a laboratory; the Sahiwal cow only carried it. The release never explains why a non-Badri recipient was used.
What happened
- A Badri female calf was born on 11 September 2026 at the Academic Dairy Farm, after a Badri embryo was transferred into a Sahiwal recipient cow.
- Oocytes were collected from selected Badri donor cows by ultrasound-guided ovum pick-up, matured, and fertilised in vitro with semen from a Badri bull supplied through the Uttarakhand Livestock Development Board.
- The work is a collaboration of ICAR-NDRI, Karnal and G. B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar, with financial support from the Uttarakhand Biotechnology Council, Haldi.
- The programme was initiated in 2023 under the then Vice-Chancellor Dr M. S. Chauhan, and the teams have worked three years to establish OPU-IVF, embryo production and embryo transfer for Badri cattle.
- A second synchronised crossbred recipient is expected to deliver a Badri calf within 5-7 days, and cloned Badri embryos have already been generated for transfer.

A conservation result in livestock is normally reported as a birth. The reportable thing here is the division of labour inside that birth: the genetics were supplied by two selected Badri animals and a laboratory dish, and the pregnancy was supplied by a cow of an entirely different breed.

Nothing in the release lets the achievement be sized. There is no Badri population figure, no yield or genetic-merit number, no count of pick-ups, oocytes, embryos or transfers behind this single calf, no cost, and no target for how many animals the programme means to produce or by when. One birth is an existence proof, not a rate.
Position
The conservation of an indigenous breed is being attempted at the level of the cell rather than the herd, and the State is visible at every step: a State university, a State biotechnology council's money, a State livestock board's semen, a State animal. That is what the document supports. A breed secured is not.
