Vehicle Factory Jabalpur will overhaul 80 T-72 and T-90 tanks a year for ₹472 crore — precisely the gap between the Army's requirement of 230 and Avadi's capacity of 150.

- Rajnath Singh and MP Chief Minister Mohan Yadav performed the Bhoomi Pujan at Vehicle Factory, Jabalpur on 27 August 2026.
- The project costs ₹472 crore and will overhaul T-72 and T-90 tanks.
- It will handle 80 tanks a year; the Army needs 230 overhauled annually.
- Heavy Vehicles Factory, Avadi can overhaul 150 a year and has supplied about 4,400 tanks in four decades.

Way-forward
Pair overhaul with upgrade — the Raksha Mantri's own point about better sensors — so that a tank returning from Jabalpur is more capable than the one that went in.
Position
Readiness is decided in the repair bay rather than at the induction ceremony: a tank waiting for overhaul is as unavailable as a tank never bought.
