The Siliguri Corridor's constraint has been land, not troops

SSB projects worth ₹189 crore were launched at Siliguri, where 1,129 acres have been handed over for the BSF and SSB and 560 more approved in principle for the corridor's security grid.

What happened

For Prelims

For UPSC: The fullest recent statement of how the Siliguri Corridor is being secured — force infrastructure, land and connectivity together. Use it for border management, the immediate neighbourhood and the Vibrant Villages Programme.
What it is NOT: This is not a decision to fence the Nepal and Bhutan borders — the SSB's assignment under One Border, One Force is precisely to guard them while they remain open and unfenced.

Anchor
A corridor is defended by what can be built on it, and at Siliguri the binding constraint has been acquiring land rather than raising battalions.
Substantiation (data)
₹189 crore of SSB projects, an 80-acre Frontier Headquarters, 1,129 acres transferred for the BSF and SSB, and in-principle approval for the 560 acres the agencies had sought.
Exemplification
SSB has held the 1,751 km Nepal border since 2001 and nearly 700 km of the Bhutan border since 2004, both unfenced — which is why presence, not barrier, is the operative measure.
Problematisation
Population, migration and tourism were named as what strengthens presence in the corridor, which makes demographic change a security variable and a civil administration question at once.
Way-forward
Sequence the Frontier Headquarters, battalion housing and Vibrant Villages road works together, so force infrastructure and civilian connectivity arrive in the same years.
Position
Security in the Northeast's gateway is a land acquisition problem before it is a deployment problem.
