One crore urban houses delivered, all allotted to women
PMAY-Urban has crossed 1.25 crore houses sanctioned and 1 crore completed and handed over, with the eighth Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee clearing another 2.09 lakh houses under PMAY-U 2.0.
What happened
- PMAY-Urban crossed 1.25 crore houses sanctioned and over 1 crore completed and delivered.
- 1 crore houses have been allotted to women.
- The 8th CSMC on 6 August 2026 sanctioned over 2.09 lakh more houses under PMAY-U 2.0.
- About 1.42 lakh are Beneficiary Led Construction and 67,045 Affordable Housing in Partnership.
- Total PMAY-U 2.0 sanctions have crossed 18.38 lakh houses.
For Prelims
- PMAY-U verticals: BLC (Beneficiary Led Construction), AHP (Affordable Housing in Partnership), ISS (Interest Subsidy Scheme) and ARH (Affordable Rental Housing).
- BLC assistance: up to ₹2.5 lakh to build a pucca house on the beneficiary's own land.
- CSMC: the Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee that approves State housing proposals; this was its 8th meeting under PMAY-U 2.0.
- The milestone: 1.25 crore sanctioned, over 1 crore delivered, 1 crore allotted to women.
- PMAY-U 2.0 split: 14.40 lakh BLC, 2.48 lakh AHP, 1.36 lakh ISS, 13,046 ARH.
- Geo-tagging: the monitoring tool used to verify construction stage and location of each sanctioned house.
- EWS: Economically Weaker Section — the beneficiary category for the sanctions cleared.
For UPSC: The urban housing benchmark. Use it for affordable housing and urban poverty, women's ownership of assets, rental housing for migrants, and the difference between sanction, grounding and occupancy in scheme reporting.
What it is NOT: Sanctioned is not delivered and delivered is not occupied — the release itself distinguishes 1.25 crore sanctioned from 1 crore completed, and occupancy status is a separate review parameter.
For Mains
Syllabus: GS2.10 · GS1.6 · Linkage L2
Anchor
A crore of urban houses in a woman's name changes who holds the household's principal asset.
Substantiation (data)
1.25 crore sanctioned and over 1 crore delivered under PMAY-U, with 18.38 lakh sanctioned under PMAY-U 2.0 across four verticals.
Exemplification
BLC gives up to ₹2.5 lakh to build on one's own land; AHP has public or private agencies build for EWS allottees.
Problematisation
The BLC vertical dominates because it needs the beneficiary to already own land — which is exactly what the urban homeless and tenant poor do not have, and Affordable Rental Housing remains tiny at 13,046 units.
Way-forward
Scale Affordable Rental Housing for migrant workers, publish occupancy rather than completion data, and link allotment to livelihood location.
Position
Urban housing policy that requires you to own land first will always reach the settled before the displaced.
Deploys into: Government interventions + Indian society (GS2.10, GS1.6) · affordable housing and urban poverty, women's asset ownership, and rental housing for migrant labour.
