300 GW clean: India crosses 60% of its 2030 target

Non-fossil installed capacity reached 300.50 GW on 31 July — more than 54 per cent of all generating capacity — with solar at 164.59 GW, up from 2.8 GW in 2014, and a record 55.29 GW added in a single year.

What it is NOT: This is installed capacity, not generation — the non-fossil share of capacity (over 54 per cent) is much higher than the non-fossil share of electricity actually generated, because solar and wind run at lower capacity utilisation than coal.

Problematisation
Capacity is not generation: renewables at low capacity utilisation still leave coal carrying baseload, and storage, transmission and discom finances are the binding constraints.

Pair capacity addition with storage obligations, inter-state transmission ahead of demand, and resolution of discom payment cycles.
