A robot flies first: uncrewed Gaganyaan targeted for late 2026

The minister told the Rajya Sabha that the first uncrewed mission carrying the humanoid Vyommitra is targeted for the fourth quarter of 2026, with the Bharatiya Antariksh Station on track for 2035.

What happened

For Prelims

For UPSC: A flagship space item. Use it for the Gaganyaan programme and human-rating, the Bharatiya Antariksh Station roadmap, India joining the small group with independent human spaceflight, and technology spin-offs from crewed programmes.
What it is NOT: These are stated targets for an uncrewed test flight and a future station — not the crewed mission itself, which follows further uncrewed validation.

For Mains

Syllabus: GS3.13 · GS3.12 · Linkage L2

Anchor
A humanoid takes the crew seat first — the last rehearsal before Indians fly on an Indian rocket.
Substantiation (data)
The first uncrewed mission with Vyommitra targeted for Q4 2026 and the Bharatiya Antariksh Station for 2035, with HLVM3 stages ground-tested and ECLSS engineering model realised.
Exemplification
Flying a humanoid to record what a body would experience is the standard human-rating step before committing a crew.
Problematisation
Human-rating demands extreme reliability; schedule ambition must never override crew-safety qualification.
Way-forward
Complete the uncrewed sequence, validate life support end to end, and build the industrial base the space station will require.
Position
Human spaceflight is a capability multiplier — for industry, for talent and for national confidence.
