India maps the pigeonpea genome, end to end
ICAR's telomere-to-telomere reference genome of arhar was approved as the global reference — India's first fully annotated T2T genome, and a tool for breeding climate-resilient pulses.
What happened
- ICAR developed India's first fully annotated telomere-to-telomere (T2T) reference genome.
- It is of pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan), variety 'Asha' — arhar or tur.
- The sequence was approved as the global reference genome of pigeonpea.
- It should accelerate climate-resilient, high-yielding and nutritious varieties.
- It builds on ICAR-NIPB's world-first draft genome of a pulse crop in 2011.
