A new instrument to measure fluids that turn solid
Indian researchers designed a hybrid magneto-rheometer to characterise magnetorheological fluids — smart materials that stiffen in a magnetic field and are used in brakes, dampers and medical devices.
What happened
- A hybrid magneto-rheometer was designed to characterise magnetorheological (MR) fluids.
- MR fluids stiffen rapidly in a magnetic field, becoming viscoelastic solids.
- The force they transmit is controllable with an electromagnet.
