A youth pledge against addiction, launched from the top

The Prime Minister launched the 'Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat Sankalp Abhiyan', urging families not to hide addiction out of social prestige and pointing to rehabilitation, yoga and open communication as the way back.

What happened

For Prelims

For UPSC: A social-welfare and public-health item. Use it for drug demand reduction versus supply-side enforcement, the NDPS framework, stigma as a barrier to treatment, and youth mobilisation as an instrument of behaviour change.
What it is NOT: This is a demand-side awareness and mobilisation campaign — not a change to the NDPS Act or to enforcement against trafficking.

For Mains

Syllabus: GS2.13 · GS2.12 · Linkage L1

Anchor
Addiction reframed as an illness to be treated, not a secret to be kept.
Substantiation (data)
A national youth campaign launched through MY Bharat, alongside the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan's reach of over 29 crore citizens since 2020.
Exemplification
The explicit appeal to families not to hide addiction for the sake of social prestige tackles stigma as a policy obstacle.
Problematisation
Awareness campaigns need matching treatment capacity — de-addiction centres, trained counsellors and follow-up care remain thin in many districts.
Way-forward
Pair mobilisation with accessible de-addiction and rehabilitation services, school counselling and supply-side enforcement.
Position
Treating addiction as a health issue rather than a disgrace is the precondition for anyone seeking help.
