Solar on water: ₹5,070 crore for floating panels with storage

The Cabinet approved the Pradhan Mantri Surya Sarovar Yojana — ₹5,070 crore to build 5,000 MW of floating solar photovoltaic projects with co-located storage of at least two hours, tapping an estimated 102 GWp of potential on India's reservoirs.

What happened

For UPSC: An energy-transition item. Use it for renewable capacity addition and the 500 GW non-fossil target, the land constraint on solar, energy storage and grid integration, and floating solar's ecological trade-offs on reservoirs.
What it is NOT: This is a scheme for floating solar on inland water bodies with storage — not offshore/ocean solar, and not a replacement for ground-mounted utility-scale solar.
