The Geological Survey of India gets its first woman chief in 176 years

What happened

For Prelims

For UPSC: A science-and-institutions item. Use it for the Geological Survey of India's mandate, women in scientific leadership, palaeontology and the K-T boundary/Deccan Traps debate, and geoscience as the base of critical-mineral security.
What it is NOT: This is an appointment to head GSI — not a change in the organisation's mandate or in mining policy.

For Mains

Syllabus: GS3.13 · GS1.7 · Linkage L1

Anchor
A 176-year-old institution gets its first woman at the helm — and a fossil scientist at that.
Substantiation (data)
Varsha Ashok Aglawe, 54th DG of GSI, three decades of service since 1992, expert in palaeontology and palynology, reported a new dinosaur nesting site.
Exemplification
Her work on the K-T boundary and Satpura-Gondwana basins ties Indian geoscience to global palaeontological research.
Problematisation
Women remain heavily under-represented in senior scientific and field-science leadership across Indian institutions.
Way-forward
Build pipelines for women in field sciences through mentoring, safe field conditions and transparent promotion.
Position
Representation at the top of scientific institutions widens both the talent pool and the questions science asks.
Deploys into: Science institutions + women in society (GS3.13, GS1.7) · the GSI's mandate, women in scientific leadership, and geoscience behind critical-mineral security.
