What happened

Kargil Vijay Diwas (26 July) marks India's victory in the 1999 Kargil War.
In 1999, intruders occupied heights on the Indian side of the LoC in Ladakh's Kargil sector.
India launched 'Operation Vijay' to recapture the peaks, supported by the IAF's 'Operation Safed Sagar'.
Key features like Tololing and Tiger Hill were recaptured; victory was declared on 26 July 1999.
Around 527 soldiers were martyred; the day honours their valour (e.g. PVC awardee Capt Vikram Batra) at the Kargil War Memorial, Dras.
