A 2D wonder-material meets castor oil: borophene makes a greener, energy-saving lubricant
Indian scientists have shown, for the first time, that borophene — an atom-thin 2D nanomaterial — works as a high-performance additive in castor-oil lubricant, cutting friction and wear in a step toward greener, energy-saving lubrication for industry and clean-energy systems.
What happened
- Scientists demonstrated, for the first time, borophene as a high-performance lubricant additive in castor oil.
- Borophene is a two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterial — an atom-thin sheet of boron (analogous to graphene).
- It markedly improves the oil's friction-reducing and anti-wear properties.
- Castor oil is a renewable, biodegradable base lubricant; the research is DST-supported.
- Cutting friction and wear saves energy and extends equipment life — for renewable energy, marine and green lubrication.
For Prelims
- Borophene: A two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterial — a single-atom-thick sheet of boron, analogous to graphene (a 2D sheet of carbon).
- 2D materials: Atom-thin materials (graphene, borophene, etc.) with unusual electrical/mechanical properties useful in electronics, energy and lubrication.
- Tribology: The science of friction, wear and lubrication; reducing friction saves energy and extends machine life.
- Castor oil: A renewable, biodegradable plant-based lubricant; borophene boosts its performance (a 'green' lubricant).
- Why it matters: Friction/wear cause huge energy losses; better lubricants cut energy use, emissions and maintenance.
- DST: The Department of Science and Technology supports such fundamental and applied materials research.
For UPSC: A neat science & technology item — an indigenous advance in 2D nanomaterials and green lubrication. Use it for advanced/nanomaterials (graphene-family 2D materials), sustainable technology and energy efficiency (tribology), and India's materials-research capability.
What it is NOT: This is a laboratory research breakthrough (a first demonstration of a lubricant additive), not a commercial product or an industrial rollout. Translation from lab to market would follow.
