Draft Advocates (Amendment) Bill, 2026 goes out for public consultation

The Law Ministry, with the Bar Council of India, released the draft Advocates (Amendment) Bill, 2026 for stakeholder and public consultation — inviting comments by 31 July on a proposed overhaul of the law that governs India's legal profession, the Advocates Act, 1961.

What happened

For Prelims

For UPSC: A governance-and-justice item — reforming the law that governs the legal profession, via pre-legislative consultation. Use it for the Advocates Act 1961 and the Bar Council of India, regulation of the legal profession and access to justice, and the value of transparent, consultative law-making.
What it is NOT: This is a draft Bill released for consultation (an early stage), not an enacted law or even an introduced Bill. The provisions are open to change based on stakeholder feedback before finalisation.
