Aadhaar App crosses 40 million downloads — self-service identity from home
The Aadhaar App has crossed 40 million (4 crore) downloads, emerging as a one-stop platform for self-service identity — letting residents update address, mobile and email, lock/unlock biometrics and download e-Aadhaar without visiting an Aadhaar centre.
What happened
- The Aadhaar App has crossed 40 million (4 crore) downloads.
- It is a one-stop platform for Aadhaar services — address, mobile and email updates, biometric lock/unlock and e-Aadhaar download.
- Residents have locked/unlocked biometrics more than 19 million times — a privacy and fraud-prevention feature.
- It has enabled 11.65 lakh address updates, ~49 lakh mobile updates and ~12.5 lakh email updates (email feature from 1 July).
- Run by UIDAI/MeitY, it is part of India's Digital Public Infrastructure, cutting the need to visit enrolment centres.
For Prelims
- Aadhaar: A 12-digit unique identity number issued by UIDAI based on biometric and demographic data; the backbone of DBT and e-KYC.
- UIDAI: The Unique Identification Authority of India — a statutory body (under the Aadhaar Act, 2016) that issues Aadhaar (under MeitY).
- Aadhaar App: A mobile platform for self-service updates (address/mobile/email), biometric lock/unlock, e-Aadhaar and face authentication.
- Biometric lock/unlock: Lets residents freeze their biometrics to prevent misuse — a privacy/anti-fraud safeguard.
- Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI): Open, interoperable digital rails — Aadhaar, UPI, DigiLocker — that public/private services build on.
- Why it matters: Accurate, self-serviced identity supports welfare delivery, banking and e-governance, and reduces centre visits.
For UPSC: A digital-governance item — the maturing of Aadhaar into a self-service, app-based identity platform within India's DPI. Use it for Digital Public Infrastructure, Aadhaar/UIDAI and the Aadhaar Act 2016, e-governance and DBT, and the privacy/security dimensions of digital identity.
What it is NOT: This is an adoption/usage milestone for an existing app (download and feature-use numbers), not a new scheme or a change to Aadhaar law. The app complements — it does not replace — Aadhaar enrolment centres for all services.
