Drones cut TB diagnosis time from 15 days to 5 — ICMR's i-DRONE study in remote Telangana
An ICMR study under its i-DRONE initiative found that drone-assisted transport of TB sputum samples in a remote Telangana district cut the median diagnosis turnaround time from 15 days to 5 — improving access to testing for people in hard-to-reach areas under the National TB Elimination Programme.
What happened

- In a study in Yadadri-Bhuvanagiri, Telangana (with AIIMS Bibinagar, under the NTEP), the median diagnosis time fell from 15 days to 5 days.
- Samples were collected at PHCs and sub-centres and flown to TB diagnostic labs; 840 participants were enrolled.
- The drone model also reduced patient travel and out-of-pocket costs.
- It strengthens the case for drones in last-mile health logistics and India's goal of eliminating TB.
