India's first hydrogen fuel cell train — a 10-coach, ~2,600-passenger green rail milestone

Indian Railways is set to flag off India's first Hydrogen Fuel Cell Trainset — a 10-coach, ~2,600-passenger train built by the Integral Coach Factory that generates its own electricity onboard from hydrogen, emits only water vapour, and runs on the 89 km Jind-Sonipat section with a dedicated hydrogen refuelling ecosystem.

What happened

For Prelims

For UPSC: A flagship green-technology and indigenisation item — hydrogen fuel-cell rail as a step in decarbonising transport and cutting diesel dependence. Use it for the National Green Hydrogen Mission, rail electrification/decarbonisation, indigenous manufacturing (ICF/RDSO), and the net-zero pathway.
What it is NOT: This is the launch of India's first hydrogen trainset (a pilot on one section), not a fleet-wide rollout. Its emissions are near-zero at the point of use; the full carbon footprint depends on how the hydrogen is produced (green vs grey).

For Mains

Syllabus: GS3.13 · GS3.12 · Linkage L2

Anchor
Decarbonising transport — indigenous hydrogen fuel-cell rail as a clean, self-powered alternative to diesel.
Substantiation (data)
India's first hydrogen trainset: 10 coaches, ~2,600 passengers, ~1,200 kW, water-vapour-only; built by ICF Chennai (RDSO-approved); 89 km Jind-Sonipat; largest railway hydrogen refuelling facility at Jind.
Exemplification
Onboard fuel-cell propulsion vs overhead electric traction; hydrogen for hard-to-electrify routes; links to the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
Problematisation
Green-hydrogen cost, refuelling infrastructure, storage/safety and scale-up economics remain the key hurdles.
Way-forward
Scale green-hydrogen production, build refuelling networks, and target hard-to-electrify and heritage routes for hydrogen rail.
Position
Indigenous hydrogen mobility advances both decarbonisation and energy self-reliance for a net-zero India.
