Elderline 14567: India's toll-free senior-citizens' helpline and the 'Ageing with Dignity' pledge

The Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment spotlighted Elderline 14567 — a toll-free, pan-India helpline for senior citizens operating 8am-8pm all week — alongside the 'Ageing with Dignity' campaign's 'Take a Pledge' drive, in which over 5.36 lakh citizens have pledged to respect and protect the elderly.

What happened

For Prelims

For UPSC: A clean welfare-of-vulnerable-sections example — elder care through a helpline and a values pledge, against the backdrop of India's ageing population. Use it for senior-citizen welfare, the 2007 Maintenance Act, demographic ageing, and the state's role in dignity and social security for the elderly.
What it is NOT: This is an awareness/status communication on an existing helpline (Elderline 14567, running since 2021) and a pledge drive — not a new scheme, law or benefit. The pledge is a voluntary commitment, not a statutory entitlement.
