BHASHINI and PNB partner to bring multilingual AI to banking in your own language
The Digital India BHASHINI Division (under MeitY) and Punjab National Bank signed an MoU to integrate BHASHINI's indigenous multilingual AI across PNB's digital banking — letting customers access banking information and services in their preferred Indian languages, advancing language-inclusive, citizen-centric financial services.
What happened
- The Digital India BHASHINI Division (DIBD) under MeitY and Punjab National Bank (PNB) signed an MoU on multilingual AI in banking.
- It will integrate BHASHINI's indigenous multilingual AI across PNB's digital banking ecosystem.
- Customers will be able to access banking information and services in their preferred Indian languages.
- It aims to make banking accessible, intuitive and inclusive, supporting financial inclusion.
- The tie-up spans BHASHINI's Udyat, Mitra, AppMitra, Pravakta and Bhashadaan; BHASHINI is a Digital Public Infrastructure for languages.
For Prelims
- BHASHINI: Bhasha Interface for India — the national language-technology mission/platform (AI translation, speech tech) to break language barriers in digital services.
- DIBD/DIC: The Digital India BHASHINI Division under the Digital India Corporation (MeitY) runs BHASHINI.
- Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI): Open, interoperable digital rails (like Aadhaar, UPI, BHASHINI) that many services can build on; BHASHINI is the language DPI.
- Bhashadaan: BHASHINI's crowdsourcing platform where citizens contribute language data to improve AI models for Indian languages.
- Financial inclusion: Serving customers in their mother tongue lowers a key barrier for first-time and rural users of formal banking.
- Indigenous AI: The initiative uses India-built language models — advancing self-reliance in AI for the country's linguistic diversity.
For UPSC: A useful digital-governance and AI example — applying India's language DPI (BHASHINI) to banking for financial inclusion in mother tongues. Use it for Digital Public Infrastructure, indigenous AI and language technology, and technology-for-inclusion in a multilingual country.
What it is NOT: This is an MoU/partnership (an enabling agreement), not a launched product or a mandatory rollout. BHASHINI provides the language-AI layer; the customer-facing services will be built and rolled out by the bank over time.
