India and Maldives conclude the first round of Free Trade Agreement talks

The first round of negotiations for an India-Maldives Free Trade Agreement concluded successfully — held virtually from 29 June to 7 July 2026 across eight technical sessions covering eight policy areas, with broad convergence on several issues, as the two neighbours deepen an economic partnership rooted in ties since 1965.

What happened

For Prelims

For UPSC: A ready India-and-neighbourhood example — an FTA with a small but strategically located Indian Ocean neighbour, under 'Neighbourhood First' and the SAGAR/MAHASAGAR maritime vision. Use it for India's trade diplomacy in South Asia, the significance of the Maldives for Indian Ocean security, and how economic instruments (FTAs) reinforce strategic partnerships.
What it is NOT: This is the conclusion of the FIRST round of negotiations (broad convergence on some issues) — not a signed or concluded FTA. Several more rounds are typically needed before signing and ratification.
