Operation Vajra: narcotics bureau dismantles a high-tech mephedrone lab in Pune, arrests two masterminds

The Central Bureau of Narcotics dismantled a sophisticated mephedrone (MD) manufacturing lab in Pune and arrested two chief conspirators under 'Operation Vajra' — a months-long interstate probe that earlier seized over 50 kg of the synthetic drug and 261 kg of precursor chemicals.

What happened

For Prelims

For UPSC: Use this for the synthetic-drug and organised-crime challenge — lab-made drugs (mephedrone), precursor control and interstate enforcement under the NDPS Act. Anchor CBN/NCB, the NDPS Act, new psychoactive substances, precursor diversion, and the demand-plus-supply (Nasha Mukt Bharat) strategy.
What it is NOT: This is an enforcement/seizure operation, not a policy or legal change. It targets synthetic-drug manufacturing (supply side) under the NDPS Act; addressing the drug problem also needs demand reduction and rehabilitation.

For Mains

Syllabus: GS3.19 · Linkage L1

Anchor
Disrupting the synthetic-drug supply chain — intelligence-led, interstate enforcement against lab-made drugs and precursor diversion.
Substantiation (data)
CBN's 'Operation Vajra' dismantles a Pune mephedrone lab; two masterminds arrested under the NDPS Act; the linked probe (from Feb 2026) seized 43.82 kg mephedrone and 261.32 kg precursors.
Exemplification
Seizure of a high-tech lab, machinery and precursor chemicals; tracking a forged-identity mastermind across states as the enforcement model.
Problematisation
Synthetic drugs are easy to make and hard to trace; precursor diversion, interstate networks and demand sustain the trade.
Way-forward
Tighten precursor control, strengthen NCB/CBN coordination and forensics, and pair supply enforcement with demand reduction (Nasha Mukt Bharat).
Position
India's stance: a whole-of-government fight against narcotics combining tough enforcement with demand reduction.
Deploys into: Security challenges of organised crime and drug trafficking (GS3.19) · the NDPS Act 1985, CBN/NCB and precursor control · synthetic drugs/new psychoactive substances and the Nasha Mukt Bharat supply-plus-demand strategy.
