Centre steps up El Niño and monsoon preparedness as the rainfall deficit narrows to 24%
With El Niño clouding the monsoon, the Agriculture Ministry said the June rainfall deficit (33%) has narrowed to 24% in July and deficient districts fell from 262 to 178 — as an El Niño Monitoring Cell, contingency crop plans, a 1.75 lakh-quintal seed reserve and weekly reviews are activated.
What happened
- The Agriculture Ministry stepped up El Niño / monsoon preparedness with high-level reviews as the southwest monsoon stays uncertain.
- The rainfall deficit narrowed from 33% (June) to 24% (July), and deficient districts fell from 262 to 178.
- Kharif sowing reached 350.85 lakh ha — about 91.95 lakh ha below last year — with soybean and cotton most affected.
- Farmers are advised to grow short-duration, low-water crops (maize, bajra, moong); a 1.75 lakh-quintal seed reserve and ICAR contingency plans are ready.
