The Environment Ministry notified Mizoram University's Natural History Museum as a Designated Repository under Section 39 of the Biological Diversity Act, 2002 — the 21st such institution — to preserve authenticated specimens from the Indo-Burma Biodiversity Hotspot.
What happened
- The Environment Ministry designated Mizoram University's Natural History Museum (Aizawl) as India's 21st Designated Repository under Section 39 of the Biological Diversity Act, 2002.
- It was notified on 19 June 2026 on the recommendation of the National Biodiversity Authority.
- Designated Repositories preserve authenticated biological specimens accessed under the Act — voucher specimens and type specimens of newly discovered species.
- The museum sits within the Indo-Burma Biodiversity Hotspot; the North-East harbours 7,500+ flowering-plant and 2,000+ faunal species.
- The designation complements BSI and ZSI repositories and advances National Biodiversity Target 4 of India's NBSAP (2024–2030), aligned with the Kunming–Montreal Framework.
