India and Indonesia deepen their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership on PM Modi's state visit
On a 6–8 July state visit, PM Modi held talks with President Prabowo, addressed the Indonesian Parliament, launched Prambanan temple restoration and was conferred Indonesia's highest civilian honour — the two sides issuing a Joint Statement spanning defence, maritime, trade, critical minerals, digital and space.
What happened
- PM Shri Narendra Modi made a State Visit to Indonesia (6–8 July 2026) at President Prabowo Subianto's invitation — his first bilateral visit since the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership elevation.
- He was accorded a ceremonial reception at Istana Merdeka, Jakarta, held tête-à-tête and delegation talks, and addressed the Indonesian Parliament (Speaker Dr. Puan Maharani).
- The leaders jointly launched restoration of the UNESCO World Heritage Prambanan Temple in Yogyakarta; Modi was conferred the 'Bintang Adipurna', Indonesia's highest civilian award.
- The Joint Statement covered defence and maritime cooperation, trade and investment, the digital economy, science and technology, space, critical minerals and energy.
- IIM Bangalore is to establish a campus in Indonesia; both sides agreed to regular Summit Meetings and welcomed Parliamentary Friendship Groups.
For Prelims
- Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP): India's highest tier of bilateral partnership; India–Indonesia ties were raised to a CSP in 2018 during PM Modi's first Indonesia visit.
- Prabowo Subianto: President of Indonesia; he was the chief guest at India's 76th Republic Day (26 January 2025).
- Prambanan Temple: A 9th-century Hindu (Shaivite) temple complex in Yogyakarta and a UNESCO World Heritage Site — evidence of shared civilisational ties.
- Indonesia & groupings: A key ASEAN and G20 member; it joined BRICS as a full member in January 2025 — relevant to India's plurilateral engagement.
- Critical minerals: Indonesia is the world's largest nickel producer — central to EV batteries — making it a strategic partner for India's clean-energy supply chains.
- Act East & Indo-Pacific: Indonesia sits astride key sea lanes; the partnership anchors India's Act East Policy and a free and open Indo-Pacific.
For UPSC: Read this as India converting a civilisational and maritime-neighbourhood relationship into a hard-security and supply-chain partnership — defence and maritime cooperation, critical minerals (nickel), digital and space, plus soft power (Prambanan, an IIM campus). Anchor the CSP tiering, ASEAN centrality, Indonesia's BRICS membership, and Act East / a free and open Indo-Pacific.
What it is NOT: This is a bilateral state visit and Joint Statement setting direction, not a treaty or a defence pact; specific deals follow from the exchanged documents. The Prambanan launch is cultural diplomacy, and the 'Bintang Adipurna' is an honour, not a policy outcome. It is separate from the multilateral ASEAN/BRICS tracks, though those form the backdrop.
For Mains
Syllabus: GS2.18 · GS2.17 · Linkage L2
Anchor
India's Indo-Pacific and Act East outreach — turning civilisational, maritime and diaspora links with Indonesia into a hard-security and supply-chain partnership.
Substantiation (data)
PM Modi's 6–8 July 2026 Indonesia state visit: India-Indonesia Joint Statement; address to Parliament; Bintang Adipurna honour; Prambanan restoration; IIM Bangalore campus; regular summits agreed.
Exemplification
Cooperation tracks — defence and maritime security, trade and investment, critical minerals (nickel), digital economy, space and people-to-people ties as the substance of the CSP.
Problematisation
Deepening ties must navigate great-power competition in the South China Sea, trade imbalances, and the gap between framework partnerships and delivered outcomes.
Way-forward
Operationalise the Joint Statement — defence/maritime mechanisms, critical-mineral supply chains and digital/space cooperation — while leveraging ASEAN centrality and the diaspora.
Position
India's stance: a free, open and rules-based Indo-Pacific anchored in the Act East Policy and strong ASEAN partnerships, not blocs.
Deploys into: India and its extended neighbourhood (GS2.17) · bilateral, regional and global groupings and agreements involving India (GS2.18 — CSP, ASEAN, BRICS backdrop) · Act East Policy, a free and open Indo-Pacific, critical-mineral supply chains, and cultural diplomacy (Prambanan).
