The Indian Navy will commission Mahendragiri (F38) — the sixth of seven Project 17A stealth frigates — at Visakhapatnam on 11 July 2026. Designed in-house by the Warship Design Bureau and built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders with over 75% indigenous content, she showcases India's Aatmanirbhar warship-building.
What happened
- The Indian Navy will commission INS Mahendragiri (F38) at Visakhapatnam on 11 July 2026 — the sixth of seven Project 17A stealth frigates.
- She is named after the Mahendragiri range in the Eastern Ghats and is the first Indian warship to bear the name.
- She was designed in-house by the Navy's Warship Design Bureau (WDB) and built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), Mumbai.
- With over 75% indigenous content, she exemplifies Aatmanirbhar Bharat and drew on a wide industrial network including many MSMEs; she uses a CODOG propulsion system.
- Her weapons/sensor suite includes surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles, electronic warfare, anti-submarine warfare systems and an integrated Combat Management System, for anti-air/anti-surface/anti-submarine roles plus HADR and SAR.

What it is NOT: This is a pre-commissioning announcement (commissioning is on 11 July), not the commissioning itself. Mahendragiri is a <b>frigate</b>, not a destroyer or aircraft carrier; '75% indigenous content' refers to the build, and some sub-systems remain imported. The name is geographic (a hill range), not that of a person.
