India builds a standardised template for future bullet-train corridors
As the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail nears completion, Railways is turning its designs, components and construction methods into a repeatable template for future corridors — with a 350 km/h design speed and a growing push for indigenous manufacturing.
What happened
- The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR) — India's first bullet-train corridor — is nearing completion and is being used to shape the future of high-speed rail in India.
- MAHSR trains have a design speed of up to 350 km/h, far above the 180 km/h design speed of Vande Bharat trains.
- A standardised template of proven designs, construction methods and operational practices is being built from MAHSR so future corridors can be executed faster, at higher quality and lower cost.
- Foundations will be designed to each site's soil, while piers, viaducts, tracks, stations, overhead electrification and signalling follow common engineering standards — simplifying spares, training and procurement.
- Under Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat, the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) is working with BEML to build indigenous high-speed trains and reduce import dependence.

- Don't confuse: The Amrit Bharat (affordable long-distance train) and the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (station redevelopment) are different from HSR; and MAHSR is standard gauge, unlike the broad gauge of most Indian Railways lines.
