What happened
- The High-Level Committee on Demographic Changes called on Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Shri Amit Shah in New Delhi for a courtesy meeting.
- The committee said it will visit various States/UTs for first-hand ground-level details and interact with Central Ministries, and has prepared a detailed questionnaire to collect information from States/UTs in advance.
- The Home Minister directed the Home Secretary to provide all possible assistance to the committee and asked it to submit recommendations at the earliest.
- The committee was constituted to study demographic changes arising from illegal immigration and other abnormal reasons and to recommend policy, legislative and administrative measures, following the PM's 'High-powered Demography Mission' announced on 15 August 2025.
- Justice Prakash Prabhakar Navlekar (Retired) is the Chairman; members include the Census Commissioner and three persons named in the release — Durga Shankar Mishra (Retd IAS), Balaji Srivastava (Retd IPS) and Dr. Shamika Ravi (PMEAC).

- Don't confuse: A high-level committee's report is advisory — its recommendations are not policy or law until the government/Parliament acts; it is also distinct from the Census organisation, though the Census Commissioner is a member.
