A day after the new Army Chief took over, the services announced a clutch of top appointments on 1 July 2026 — new Vice Chiefs of the Army and Air Staff, a new tri-service CISC, and fresh Army and Air Force commanders-in-chief.
What happened
- Lt Gen Sandeep Jain assumed charge as Vice Chief of the Army Staff (VCOAS), having earlier been GOC-in-C, Southern Command.
- Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit took over as Vice Chief of the Air Staff (VCAS), moving from his tri-service post as Chief of Integrated Defence Staff to the Chairman, Chiefs of Staff Committee (CISC), while Air Marshal Tejinder Singh became the new CISC at HQ Integrated Defence Staff.
- In the Army, Lt Gen Rajesh Pushkar took charge as GOC-in-C Southern Command (HQ Pune) and Lt Gen Mohit Malhotra took over the Jaipur-based South Western Command.
- In the Air Force, Air Marshal Jasvir Singh Mann became AOC-in-C Southern Air Command and Air Marshal PV Shivanand became AOC-in-C South Western Air Command, succeeding Tejinder Singh.
- Several appointees cited operational service in Operation Sindoor, and the churn followed the change of the Chief of the Army Staff on 30 June 2026.

- Chief of Defence Staff (CDS): Created in 2019, a four-star officer who is the Permanent Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee (COSC), principal military adviser to the Defence Minister, and head of the Department of Military Affairs; he has no operational command over the individual services.
- Chiefs of Staff Committee (COSC): The forum of the three Service Chiefs plus the CDS (as Permanent Chairman) for inter-service coordination; earlier the senior-most Chief chaired it by rotation.
- CISC: The Chief of Integrated Defence Staff to the Chairman COSC is a three-star officer heading the Integrated Defence Staff (IDS); he is subordinate to the CDS and is not the same as the CDS.
- Vice Chiefs: The Vice Chief of the Army Staff (VCOAS) and Vice Chief of the Air Staff (VCAS) are the second-senior officers of their service, deputising for the Service Chief; each command-in-chief is a GOC-in-C (Army) or AOC-in-C (Air Force), of Lt Gen / Air Marshal rank.
- Army & Air commands: The Army has seven commands — Southern Command HQ is Pune and South Western Command HQ is Jaipur; commands are territorial/operational formations, distinct from proposed joint theatre commands.
- Theaterisation / Integrated Theatre Commands: The reform to reorganise the three services into joint theatre commands, each under a single commander, to improve jointness — steered by the CDS; theatre commands are not yet operational.
- Don't confuse: The CDS (four-star, Permanent Chairman COSC, head of DMA) is distinct from the CISC (three-star, heads the IDS); constitutionally the President is the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces (Article 53), and civilian control rests with the Cabinet.
For UPSC: Use this reshuffle to revise India's higher defence organisation, not to memorise names: the CDS as Permanent Chairman of the COSC and head of the Department of Military Affairs, the CISC-led Integrated Defence Staff, the service Vice Chiefs, and the Army/Air commands (Southern Command at Pune, South Western at Jaipur). Anchor it to the theaterisation reform and the constitutional position of the President as Supreme Commander with civilian control of the military.
What it is NOT: This is a routine set of higher-command appointments, not the creation of new theatre commands or a change in the CDS. The CISC (three-star, heads the Integrated Defence Staff) must not be confused with the CDS (four-star, Permanent Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee); the Vice Chiefs and commanders-in-chief command service formations, not joint theatres.
