The law that replaces MGNREGA takes effect — with a 125-day job guarantee
From 1 July, the VB-GRAM-G Act, 2025 comes into force across rural India, raising the statutory wage-employment guarantee from 100 to 125 days per household — the successor framework to MGNREGA, with revised wage rates notified.
What happened
- The Viksit Bharat – Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) [VB-G RAM G] Act, 2025 will come into force across rural India from 1 July 2026, replacing the earlier MGNREGA framework.
- It ushers in a strengthened framework for rural employment, livelihood security and sustainable village development.
- The Act enhances the statutory wage-employment guarantee from 100 days to 125 days for every eligible rural household, while creating durable rural assets and advancing 'Viksit Bharat @2047'.
- Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said no eligible rural worker should remain without work even for a single day, and that the Centre, States and UTs have completed all administrative, financial and technical preparations for a seamless transition.
- The government separately notified the revised wage rates under the new Act, with adequate funds and systems in place and ongoing works continuing uninterrupted.
For Prelims
- VB-GRAM-G Act, 2025: The 'Viksit Bharat – Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin)' — the successor to MGNREGA; in force 1 July 2026, raising the guaranteed wage-employment from 100 to 125 days per rural household.
- MGNREGA (2005): The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act — a rights-based law guaranteeing 100 days of unskilled wage employment to rural households, with a focus on durable assets and social audit; the framework VB-GRAM-G replaces/builds on.
- Wage guarantee & wages: Wages are notified (the new Act revises rates); demand-driven work, payment within a set period, and an unemployment allowance for delayed work are core features.
- Durable assets: Works create rural infrastructure — water conservation, rural roads, land development — linking employment to asset creation.
- Social audit & transparency: MGNREGA pioneered social audits and digital MIS; continuity of accountability mechanisms matters in the transition.
- Rural livelihoods ecosystem: Complements DAY-NRLM (SHGs/Lakhpati Didi), PMAY-G and PMGSY for holistic rural development.
- Don't confuse: VB-GRAM-G is a statutory employment guarantee (now 125 days) succeeding MGNREGA — distinct from skilling or livelihood (DAY-NRLM) schemes; it is rights-based and demand-driven.
For UPSC: The VB-GRAM-G Act, 2025 — MGNREGA's successor — comes into force on 1 July, raising the rural job guarantee from 100 to 125 days. Anchor MGNREGA (2005, rights-based, durable assets, social audit), the VB-GRAM-G framework and 125-day guarantee, demand-driven employment and unemployment allowance, and links to DAY-NRLM/PMAY-G in rural development.
What it is NOT: VB-GRAM-G is a statutory, demand-driven wage-employment guarantee (now 125 days) succeeding MGNREGA — not a skilling or self-employment scheme. It is rights-based; coming 'into force' means the legal framework and revised wages take effect from 1 July, with ongoing MGNREGA works continuing.
