India gets a common yardstick for how 'ready' a technology really is

The Principal Scientific Adviser's office launched the 'TRL Compass' — a national platform that standardises Technology Readiness Level assessments, so public R&D funding can judge how close an innovation is to real-world deployment.

What happened

For Prelims

For UPSC: OPSA launched 'TRL Compass' to standardise Technology Readiness Level assessment for publicly funded R&D, supporting the ANRF and RDI Fund. Anchor the 9-level TRL scale, the ANRF (ANRF Act 2023), the RDI Fund (Budget 2025), the PSA/OPSA role, and translating research into deployable products (innovation/commercialisation).
What it is NOT: TRL Compass is a technology-readiness assessment tool — distinct from the funding bodies it serves (ANRF, RDI Fund). A high TRL indicates deployment-readiness, not guaranteed commercial success; the 9-level TRL scale gauges maturity, not market viability.

For Mains

Syllabus: GS3.12 · GS3.13 · Linkage L2

Anchor
From lab to market — objective technology-readiness assessment to translate India's research into deployable products.
Substantiation (data)
OPSA + DSCI launched 'TRL Compass' adapting the 9-level TRL scale; supports the ANRF and the RDI Fund; sector annexures (health/pharma, software).
Exemplification
Cite TRL Compass with the ANRF and RDI Fund as parts of an ecosystem to fund and commercialise R&D.
Problematisation
India's low gross R&D spend, weak lab-to-market translation, and private-sector participation gaps challenge innovation.
Way-forward
Standardise readiness assessment, scale RDI/ANRF funding, deepen industry-academia links, and build IP/commercialisation pathways.
Position
Government stance: objective TRL assessment strengthens the funding and translation of research toward Viksit Bharat 2047.
Deploys into: Innovation ecosystem & R&D translation (TRL Compass/ANRF/RDI Fund) · technology readiness & commercialisation · PSA/OPSA coordination · indigenisation (GS3.12 developing new technology, GS3.13 IT & innovation).
