India bets on 'precision medicine' — Indian data for Indian patients

On the eve of Doctor's Day, Dr Jitendra Singh said India is building home-grown solutions in gene therapy, nuclear medicine and AI-driven diagnostics — with the Genome India Mission having sequenced over 10,000 genomes — positioning the country's vast genetic diversity as a scientific strength.

What happened

For Prelims

For UPSC: Dr Jitendra Singh framed precision medicine — gene therapy, nuclear medicine, AI diagnostics — around India's genetic diversity, citing 10,000+ genomes sequenced. Anchor precision/personalised medicine, the Genome India Project, gene therapy (indigenous CAR-T), nuclear medicine/theranostics, the ANRF (ANRF Act 2023) and BioE3 Policy.
What it is NOT: Precision medicine tailors treatment to the individual — it is not a single drug or scheme. The Genome India Mission (a reference genetic database) is distinct from gene therapy (a treatment), and the ANRF (a research-funding body) is distinct from the projects it funds.

For Mains

Syllabus: GS3.13 · GS2.13 · Linkage L2

Anchor
Frontier biomedical science — genomics, gene therapy and AI turning India's genetic diversity into affordable precision healthcare.
Substantiation (data)
Dr Jitendra Singh on Doctor's Day eve: Genome India Mission 10,000+ genomes sequenced; gene therapy, nuclear medicine, AI diagnostics; ANRF and Tata Memorial Centre.
Exemplification
Cite the Genome India Mission, indigenous CAR-T gene therapy, nuclear-medicine theranostics and BioE3 as building a precision-medicine ecosystem.
Problematisation
Genomic data privacy and ethics, equitable access and cost, clinical infrastructure, and translating research to bedside are challenges.
Way-forward
Expand the genome database with safeguards, scale affordable gene/nuclear therapies, fund R&D via ANRF, and build clinical and data-governance capacity.
Position
Government stance: India's genetic diversity is a scientific strength — 'Indian data for Indian patients' can yield affordable, globally relevant healthcare.
Deploys into: Biotech & precision medicine (Genome India/gene therapy) · AI in healthcare & nuclear medicine · R&D ecosystem (ANRF/BioE3) · health innovation (GS3.13 biotech & emerging tech, GS2.13 health).
