A new home-built patrol ship joins the Coast Guard

The Indian Coast Guard commissioned ICGS Akshay — a new-generation Fast Patrol Vessel designed and built by Goa Shipyard — boosting maritime law enforcement, coastal security and search-and-rescue, and underscoring self-reliant warship-building.

What happened

For Prelims

For UPSC: The Coast Guard commissioned the indigenously built ICGS Akshay Fast Patrol Vessel (Goa Shipyard), boosting coastal security and self-reliance. Anchor the Indian Coast Guard (Coast Guard Act 1978, MoD armed force, maritime zones), FPV vs OPV, Goa Shipyard Limited and indigenous warship-building, coastal-security architecture post-26/11, and Aatmanirbhar Bharat in defence.
What it is NOT: The Coast Guard (an MoD armed force for maritime law enforcement, SAR and coastal security) is distinct from the Navy (warfighting). A Fast Patrol Vessel is a smaller, near-shore craft — distinct from an Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV).

Substantiation (data)
ICGS Akshay, a new-generation Fast Patrol Vessel, commissioned (Goa, 27 June 2026); designed and built indigenously by Goa Shipyard Limited.
Exemplification

Problematisation
Vast coastline and EEZ to patrol, fleet expansion and maintenance, multi-agency coordination and emerging maritime threats remain challenges.
Way-forward
Expand indigenous patrol fleets, deepen Navy-ICG-marine-police coordination, invest in maritime-domain awareness, and sustain shipyard capacity.
Position
Government stance: indigenous Coast Guard platforms reflect Aatmanirbhar Bharat and reinforce safe, secure and clean seas.
Deploys into: Coastal & maritime security (Indian Coast Guard/Coast Guard Act) · indigenous warship-building (Goa Shipyard/Aatmanirbhar Bharat) · maritime zones & coastal-security grid (GS3.12 indigenisation & new technology, GS3.20 security forces & agencies).
