A GI-tagged mango from Madhya Pradesh makes its first commercial trip abroad

APEDA facilitated the first commercial export of GI-tagged Rewa Sundarja mangoes from Madhya Pradesh to the UAE — a one-tonne shipment that opens an international market for a prized regional variety and showcases India's geographical-indication produce.

What happened

For Prelims

For UPSC: APEDA enabled the first commercial export of GI-tagged Rewa Sundarja mangoes from MP to the UAE. Anchor Geographical Indications (GI Act 1999, GI as IP, GI Registry/DPIIT), APEDA's export-promotion role, FPOs and pack houses in export linkages, GI premium and 'brand India', and India's mango-export priorities.
What it is NOT: A Geographical Indication (collective, place-based intellectual property under the GI Act, 1999) is distinct from a trademark or patent. This is a first commercial shipment facilitated by APEDA — not a new scheme; the GI tag itself is registered separately under the GI Registry.

For Mains

Syllabus: GS3.4 · GS3.13 · Linkage L2

Anchor
Value-added agri-exports and intellectual property — leveraging GI tags to take India's regional produce global and lift farmer incomes.
Substantiation (data)
First commercial export of GI-tagged Rewa Sundarja mangoes (MP→UAE, 1 MT, 26 June 2026) facilitated by APEDA with FPOs and pack houses.
Exemplification
Cite GI-tagged mango exports (Rewa Sundarja, Banganapalle) and APEDA-FPO linkages as a model for premiumising agri-exports.
Problematisation
Perishability and cold-chain/logistics costs, quality compliance (SPS norms), GI awareness and small-farmer integration challenge agri-exports.
Way-forward
Scale GI registration and branding, strengthen FPOs/pack houses and cold chains, meet phytosanitary standards, and diversify export markets.
Position
Government stance: promoting GI-tagged produce abroad builds 'brand India', protects regional varieties and boosts farmer incomes.
Deploys into: Agri-exports & value addition (APEDA/FPOs) · Geographical Indications as IP (GI Act 1999) · farmer incomes & 'brand India' · cold chain/standards (GS3.4 agriculture & marketing, GS3.13 IPR).
