India's driver-owned 'Bharat Taxi' goes live in Gujarat

Cooperation Minister Amit Shah launched 'Bharat Taxi' — a cooperative mobility platform where drivers ('Sarathis') are co-owners, not just service providers — covering taxis, autos and two-wheelers, extending 'Sahkar se Samriddhi' to urban transport.

What happened

For Prelims

For UPSC: Amit Shah launched 'Bharat Taxi', a cooperative, driver-owned mobility platform (taxis/autos/two-wheelers) extending 'Sahkar se Samriddhi' to transport. Anchor the Ministry of Cooperation (2021), the cooperative principle (member ownership, one-member-one-vote), the backing national cooperatives (NCDC/Amul/IFFCO/NCEL), the 97th Amendment, and worker ownership in the gig economy.
What it is NOT: A driver-owned cooperative platform ('Sarathi' as owner, sharing profits) is distinct from private aggregators (Ola/Uber) where drivers are contractors. This is the Gujarat launch (after a Dec 2025 soft-launch) — not yet a nationwide rollout.
