India's indigenous 'Netra' airborne early-warning system gets final operational clearance
DRDO handed the IAF the Final Operational Clearance for the home-built Netra AEW&C — the 'eyes in the sky' that boost airborne surveillance and battle management — marking a milestone in self-reliant aerospace defence.
What happened
- The Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) handed over the Final Operational Clearance (FOC) certificate of the indigenous 'Netra' Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) system to the Indian Air Force.
- The ceremony was held in Bengaluru on 25 June 2026, presided over by Deputy Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Awadhesh Kumar Bharti.
- Netra was indigenously developed through close collaboration among the IAF, DRDO and associated industries, with DRDO's Centre for Air Borne Systems (CABS) as the lead laboratory.
- It significantly enhances airborne surveillance, situational awareness and battle-management capability — acting as a force multiplier.
- The Initial Operational Clearance (IOC) was given in 2017; the FOC represents a landmark in India's self-reliance in advanced aerospace and defence technologies.
