India's 20th Statistics Day spotlights 'administrative data', honouring statistician Mahalanobis
On 29 June, the birth anniversary of P.C. Mahalanobis — the father of Indian statistics — MoSPI marks two decades of Statistics Day with a 2026 theme on unlocking the policy potential of administrative data.
What happened
- The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) will celebrate the 20th Statistics Day on 29 June 2026 at the Dr Ambedkar International Centre, New Delhi.
- The day is observed every year to commemorate the birth anniversary of Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis, a pioneer in statistics and economic planning.
- Statistics Day aims to create public awareness — especially among the younger generation — about the importance of statistics in socio-economic planning and policy.
- Celebrated with a theme of national relevance since its inception in 2007, the 2026 theme is 'Unlocking the Potential of Administrative Data'.
- The theme underscores leveraging administrative data for evidence-based policymaking, and the need to strengthen data quality, interoperability, integration and governance.
For Prelims
- P.C. Mahalanobis: The 'Father of Indian Statistics' (born 29 June 1893); founded the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Kolkata (1931), devised the Mahalanobis distance, and shaped India's planning.
- Feldman-Mahalanobis model: The strategy underpinning the Second Five Year Plan (1956) — emphasising heavy/capital-goods industry for self-reliant growth (the 'Nehru-Mahalanobis' model).
- National Statistics Day: Observed on 29 June (Mahalanobis's birthday); 'World Statistics Day' is separate (observed by the UN every five years).
- MoSPI / NSO: The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, with the National Statistical Office (NSO), compiles GDP, CPI, IIP, PLFS and conducts the National Sample Survey (NSS) and Census-linked surveys.
- Administrative data: Data generated as a by-product of administration (e.g. tax, GST, registrations, scheme records) — cheaper and timelier than surveys, but needing quality and integration (the 2026 theme).
- National Sample Survey (NSS): Mahalanobis established the NSS (1950) — the backbone of India's socio-economic surveys (consumption, employment, etc.).
- Don't confuse: National Statistics Day (29 June, Mahalanobis) is distinct from World Statistics Day (UN); administrative data complements — it does not replace — survey/census data.
For UPSC: India's 20th Statistics Day (29 June) honours P.C. Mahalanobis, with a 2026 theme on administrative data. Anchor Mahalanobis (Father of Indian Statistics, ISI 1931, Mahalanobis distance), the Feldman-Mahalanobis model and the Second Five Year Plan, MoSPI/NSO and the NSS, and administrative data vs survey data for evidence-based policy.
What it is NOT: National Statistics Day (29 June, marking Mahalanobis) is distinct from the UN's World Statistics Day. Administrative data complements survey/census data — it does not replace it; the 2026 theme is about better using such data, not abandoning surveys.

Substantiation (data)
20th Statistics Day (29 June 2026), honouring Mahalanobis; theme 'Unlocking the Potential of Administrative Data'; focus on data quality, interoperability and governance.
Exemplification
Cite the NSS, GST/tax and scheme records, and India's statistical legacy (Mahalanobis/ISI) as examples of building a robust data ecosystem.
Problematisation
Data gaps, quality and timeliness, fragmented administrative systems, privacy, and credibility concerns challenge evidence-based policymaking.
Way-forward
Improve data quality/interoperability and governance, integrate administrative and survey data, protect privacy, and modernise the statistical system.
Position
Government stance: a strong, modern statistical system — leveraging administrative data — is essential for evidence-based planning and good governance.
