SAIL's indigenous warship steel goes into three newly commissioned Navy vessels

The state steelmaker supplied all 5,700 tonnes of special defence-grade DMR steel for INS Dunagiri, Agray and Sanshodhak — commissioned together by the PM in Kolkata — underscoring self-reliance in warship-building materials.

What happened

• Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), a Maharatna Central PSU under the Ministry of Steel, supplied the entire 5,700 tonnes of special steel for three recently commissioned Indian Navy ships.
• The ships are the advanced stealth frigate INS Dunagiri, the anti-submarine warfare shallow-water craft INS Agray, and the survey vessel (large) INS Sanshodhak.
• The three vessels were formally commissioned into the Indian Navy on 21 June 2026 by PM Narendra Modi at a ceremony at Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata.
• The steel supplied includes special-quality DMR 249A grade hot-rolled sheets and plates, a defence-grade steel.
• It was manufactured at SAIL's flagship Bokaro, Bhilai and Rourkela Steel Plants, underscoring its role in India's maritime defence infrastructure and Atmanirbhar Bharat.
