SAIL's indigenous warship steel goes into three newly commissioned Navy vessels

The state steelmaker supplied all 5,700 tonnes of special defence-grade DMR steel for INS Dunagiri, Agray and Sanshodhak — commissioned together by the PM in Kolkata — underscoring self-reliance in warship-building materials.

What happened

For Prelims

For UPSC: SAIL supplied all 5,700 tonnes of DMR 249A defence-grade steel for three Navy ships (INS Dunagiri, Agray, Sanshodhak) commissioned by the PM at Kolkata. Anchor SAIL (Maharatna PSU, plants), DMR warship-grade steel (developed by DRDO's DMRL, replacing imports), indigenous warship-building (GRSE/MDL/CSL), Project 17A frigates, the Maharatna/Navratna classification, and Atmanirbhar Bharat in defence.
What it is NOT: SAIL supplies the steel — it does not build the warships (defence shipyards like GRSE/MDL do) or operate them (the Navy does). DMR 249A is a special defence-grade steel (DRDO-developed) replacing imported steel — not ordinary structural steel.

For Mains

Syllabus: GS3.12 · GS3.20 · Linkage L2

Anchor
Self-reliance in strategic materials — indigenous defence-grade steel underpinning India's warship-building capability.
Substantiation (data)
SAIL supplied all 5,700 tonnes of DMR 249A steel for INS Dunagiri, Agray and Sanshodhak (commissioned 21 June 2026, Kolkata); made at Bokaro/Bhilai/Rourkela.
Exemplification
Cite DMR steel (DRDO-SAIL) and indigenous warship construction as examples of Atmanirbhar Bharat in defence and the public-sector role.
Problematisation
Sustaining quality, capacity and cost-competitiveness in specialised steel, and scaling indigenous content across defence platforms, remain challenges.
Way-forward
Deepen DRDO-SAIL-industry collaboration on special steels, scale indigenous defence manufacturing, and reduce import dependence across platforms.
Position
Government stance: indigenous defence-grade steel from public-sector flagships strengthens maritime defence and self-reliance under Atmanirbhar Bharat.
Deploys into: Defence indigenisation & strategic materials (DMR steel) · public-sector (Maharatna SAIL) & warship-building · DRDO/DMRL R&D · Atmanirbhar Bharat (GS3.12 indigenisation & new technology, GS3.20 security forces & agencies).
