India pitches a 'BRICS Space Economy' as space agency chiefs meet in Bengaluru
At the BRICS Heads of Space Agencies meeting, the science minister called for the bloc to pool its scientific and industrial strengths to become a major force in the fast-growing global space economy.
What happened
- Union MoS (I/C) for Science & Technology and Space, Dr Jitendra Singh, pitched a 'BRICS Space Economy' as the next frontier of global growth.
- He was addressing the Valedictory Session of the BRICS Heads of Space Agencies (HOSA) meeting in Bengaluru.
- He called for collective action among member nations to unlock new opportunities in innovation, investment, entrepreneurship and sustainable development.
- He argued that BRICS countries possess the scale, scientific capabilities, technological strengths and industrial capacity to emerge as a major force in the rapidly expanding global space economy.
- He framed BRICS space cooperation as a driver of innovation, sustainability and shared prosperity, saying BRICS nations can use space to develop solutions for global challenges.
For Prelims
- BRICS HOSA: The BRICS Heads of Space Agencies meeting — a space-cooperation track of BRICS (which has a remote-sensing satellite constellation cooperation agreement); India hosted it in Bengaluru under its 2026 chairmanship.
- BRICS: Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, expanded (2024-25) to add Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran and the UAE; India holds the 2026 chairmanship.
- Global space economy: Estimated at several hundred billion dollars and projected to exceed $1 trillion by ~2035; India targets growing its share (from ~$8-9 bn toward ~$45 bn).
- India's space sector: Enabled by the Indian Space Policy 2023, IN-SPACe (promoter/regulator) and NSIL (commercial arm), with 100% FDI liberalisation and 400+ start-ups.
- ISRO: India's space agency (Department of Space); BRICS partners (e.g. Russia's Roscosmos, China's CNSA) have varied space capabilities, enabling cooperation in remote sensing, launch and applications.
- Space applications for development: Earth observation, weather, navigation and communication satellites serve disaster management, agriculture and governance — a Global South cooperation theme.
- Don't confuse: The 'BRICS Space Economy' is a proposed cooperative agenda (under India's chairmanship), not a formal institution; BRICS space cooperation builds on the existing remote-sensing constellation agreement.
For UPSC: India pitched a 'BRICS Space Economy' at the BRICS Heads of Space Agencies meeting in Bengaluru, under its 2026 chairmanship. Anchor BRICS (expanded) and India's chairmanship, the BRICS HOSA/remote-sensing constellation cooperation, the global space economy's growth and India's space-sector reforms (Indian Space Policy 2023, IN-SPACe/NSIL, start-ups), and space applications for Global South development.
What it is NOT: The 'BRICS Space Economy' is a proposed cooperative agenda under India's BRICS chairmanship — not a formal institution or fund. The HOSA meeting builds on existing BRICS space cooperation (e.g. the remote-sensing satellite constellation), not a new agency.

Exemplification
Cite the BRICS HOSA cooperation and India's space reforms (IN-SPACe, start-ups) as examples of space diplomacy and the new space economy.
Problematisation
Divergent capabilities and interests among BRICS members, technology-sharing sensitivities, and translating ideas into concrete projects are challenges.
Way-forward
Build joint BRICS space projects (remote sensing, applications), share data for development, and grow India's space economy via reforms and partnerships.
