INCOIS launches India's first specialised El Niño bulletins for the maritime sector
India's ocean-information agency is now issuing dedicated El Niño advisories, warning that a developing event will warm the Indian Ocean into 2027 — stressing coral reefs and fisheries and triggering marine heatwaves.
What happened
- The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) began releasing specialised El Niño bulletins to highlight the possible impacts of the ongoing El Niño on India's maritime sectors.
- The first specialised bulletin was released on 22 June 2026, and confirms that the El Niño event continues to develop and is expected to peak in winter (November 2026 to January 2027).
- As a result, sea-surface temperatures in the Indian Ocean will be higher than normal until April/May 2027.
- The marine ecosystem of the northern Indian Ocean (both the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal) is likely to face thermal stress, especially during March-May 2027.
- This can cause more coral-reef bleaching, marine heatwaves and a reduction in fish catch (particularly sardine and mackerel) as stocks migrate or recruitment falls.
