The Air Force's annual tournament in Bengaluru commemorates Marshal of the Air Force Arjan Singh, the 1965 war hero and the only IAF officer ever elevated to five-star rank — a reminder of sport and valour in the armed forces.
What happened
- The 7th edition of the Marshal of the Air Force Arjan Singh Memorial Hockey Tournament 2026 will be held from 23 June to 3 July 2026 at Air Force Station Jalahalli, Bengaluru.
- It is organised by the Air Force Sports Control Board (AFSCB), which has run the tournament since 2018; 16 teams will compete on a league-cum-knockout basis.
- The tournament commemorates Marshal of the Air Force Arjan Singh, whose passion for hockey was 'unparalleled' and who was an inspiration to air warriors, leading from the front in war and in sport.
- The Indian Air Force has consistently produced athletes who have represented India at international competitions.
- The event highlights the armed forces' culture of sporting excellence and the enduring legacy of one of India's most distinguished air warriors.

- Marshal of the Air Force: The five-star rank of the Indian Air Force (equivalent to Field Marshal in the Army and Admiral of the Fleet in the Navy). Arjan Singh is the only IAF officer ever promoted to it (in 2002).
- Five-star officers of India: Only three Indians have held five-star rank — Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa (Army) and Marshal of the Air Force Arjan Singh (IAF). India has had no five-star naval officer.

- Don't confuse: 'Marshal of the Air Force' (five-star, ceremonial/honorary, held for life) is distinct from 'Air Chief Marshal' (the four-star serving Chief of the Air Staff).
