India's space odyssey: from Chandrayaan-3 to a 2028 space station

What happened
- Chandrayaan-3 (August 2023) made India the first nation to soft-land near the Moon's south pole and the fourth to soft-land on the Moon; Chandrayaan-1 (2008) had discovered lunar water.
- Mangalyaan (2014) made India the first to reach Mars on a maiden attempt, and Aditya-L1 (2023) became India's first solar observatory at the Sun-Earth L1 point.
- SpaDeX (January 2025) made India the fourth nation to achieve autonomous in-space docking, using the indigenous Bharatiya Docking System.
- The sector has opened up: space start-ups rose from 1 (2014) to 400+ (2026), 100% FDI is permitted, and the ~$8 billion space economy is targeted to reach $40-45 billion by 2030.
- Ahead lie Gaganyaan human spaceflight (Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla flew to the ISS on Axiom-4 in 2025) and the Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS), with its first module targeted by 2028.

- Don't confuse: Mangalyaan = Mars; Aditya-L1 = Sun (at L1, not on the Sun); Chandrayaan = Moon; NavIC = India's regional navigation system, distinct from these science missions.

What it is NOT: Aditya-L1 studies the Sun from the Sun-Earth L1 point — it does not land on or fly into the Sun. Chandrayaan-3 landed near (not exactly at) the lunar south pole, making India first there and fourth to land on the Moon. The Bharatiya Antariksh Station is a planned future station (first module ~2028), not yet in orbit.
