India's space odyssey: from Chandrayaan-3 to a 2028 space station

A PIB backgrounder tracks India's space leap — Chandrayaan-3's south-pole landing, Aditya-L1, SpaDeX docking, 400+ space start-ups and 100% FDI — towards a $40-45 billion space economy, Gaganyaan and the Bharatiya Antariksh Station by 2028.

What happened

For Prelims

For UPSC: A PIB backgrounder maps India's space leap from Chandrayaan-3 and Aditya-L1 to Gaganyaan and a space station by 2028, with 400+ start-ups and 100% FDI. Anchor key missions (Chandrayaan-3 south pole, Mangalyaan, Aditya-L1, SpaDeX), the space-economy target ($40-45 bn by 2030), sector reforms (IN-SPACe, NSIL, FDI), and Gaganyaan/BAS.
What it is NOT: Aditya-L1 studies the Sun from the Sun-Earth L1 point — it does not land on or fly into the Sun. Chandrayaan-3 landed near (not exactly at) the lunar south pole, making India first there and fourth to land on the Moon. The Bharatiya Antariksh Station is a planned future station (first module ~2028), not yet in orbit.

Syllabus: GS3.13 · GS3.8 · Linkage L2

Anchor
India's rise as a space power — scientific milestones plus a liberalised, start-up-driven space economy.
Substantiation (data)
Chandrayaan-3 (south pole, 2023), Aditya-L1, SpaDeX (4th nation to dock); start-ups 1 (2014) to 400+; 100% FDI; ~$8 bn economy targeting $40-45 bn by 2030; BAS first module by 2028.
Exemplification
Cite ISRO's missions and reforms (IN-SPACe, NSIL, FDI) as examples of frugal innovation and a public-private space ecosystem.
Problematisation
Funding and human-spaceflight risk, global competition, scaling private players, and dual-use/space-security concerns are challenges.
Way-forward
Sustain mission cadence and human-spaceflight capacity, deepen private participation and FDI, and grow the commercial and downstream space economy.
Position
Government stance: space is a strategic and economic frontier; reforms and ambitious missions position India as a leading space-faring nation.
Deploys into: Space science & technology (Chandrayaan, Aditya-L1, SpaDeX, Gaganyaan) · space-sector reforms & economy (IN-SPACe, NSIL, FDI) · indigenisation & innovation (GS3.13 science & technology / space, GS3.8 industrial growth).
