DAE opens deuterated-compounds plant, commissions prototype sodium cell
The Department of Atomic Energy inaugurated an indigenous Versatile Deuterated Compounds Production Plant and commissioned a 24 kA prototype sodium cell at Vadodara — a step towards home-made nuclear-grade sodium for India's Fast Breeder Reactor programme.
What happened
- DAE Secretary and AEC Chairman Dr Ajit Kumar Mohanty inaugurated the indigenous Versatile Deuterated Compounds Production Plant (VDPP) and commissioned a 24 kA Prototype Sodium Cell at the Heavy Water Board Facilities (HWBF), Vadodara.
- The VDPP boosts India's indigenous capability to produce high-purity deuterated compounds and solvents for advanced research, strategic applications and frontier technologies.
- The Prototype Sodium Cell is a milestone towards indigenous, industrial-scale production of nuclear-grade sodium.
- Nuclear-grade sodium is a critical coolant for India's Fast Breeder Reactor (FBR) programme — the second stage of the three-stage nuclear power programme.
- Executed by the Heavy Water Board, the developments support self-reliance (AtmaNirbhar Bharat) in critical nuclear and scientific materials.

- Three-stage nuclear programme: Conceived by Homi Bhabha — Stage 1: Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) using natural uranium; Stage 2: Fast Breeder Reactors (FBRs) using plutonium and a U-238 blanket; Stage 3: thorium-based reactors using U-233.
- Why sodium: FBRs use liquid sodium as a coolant (it doesn't moderate neutrons and has excellent heat transfer); nuclear-grade sodium must be ultra-pure.
- Fast Breeder Reactor: 'Breeds' more fissile material than it consumes; India's PFBR at Kalpakkam (BHAVINI) is the flagship FBR — key to using India's vast thorium reserves via Stage 3.
- Heavy water & deuterium: Heavy water (D2O) is the moderator/coolant in PHWRs; deuterium is heavy hydrogen. The Heavy Water Board (under DAE) produces heavy water and now deuterated compounds.
- Deuterated compounds: Molecules with hydrogen replaced by deuterium; used in NMR spectroscopy, pharmaceuticals and advanced research.
- DAE & AEC: The Department of Atomic Energy (under the PM) implements the nuclear programme; the Atomic Energy Commission is the apex policy body.
- Don't confuse: Deuterated compounds (research chemicals) are different from nuclear-grade sodium (FBR coolant); both are HWBF products but serve different ends.

What it is NOT: Nuclear-grade sodium (an FBR coolant) is distinct from deuterated compounds (research chemicals/solvents) — this release covers both. Fast Breeder Reactors are Stage 2 of the three-stage programme (not Stage 3, which is thorium-based). Sodium is a coolant in FBRs, not a moderator.
